Team Building Activities

When people think about team building days they may not consider all of the benefits that these activities can bring. Not only do they help to improve key skills, but they can also be fun and enjoyable events.

However, what many people may not know is that team building can dramatically improve communication between both employees and clients or customers. Communication is important in any business, whether it's in-house or with customers. Which is why it’s something that we think employees should work on. If you need some help improving communication in your workplace, here are some ideas to get you started.

Team Building Activities

In-House

The most important reason to improve communication skills in your business is to help it run in a smoother and more efficient way. Rather than working alone, everyone should be clued up and aware of what is going on.

Not only will this help the office to run more smoothly, but it will also help to limit any confusion and effectively deal with issues that may arise.

Activities such as “Puppet Masters” and “Flat Out Formula One” are ideal for this as they are both great examples of activities where teams need to work together and communicate in order to win. You can ensure that the teams are full of a range of people from different areas in the workplace, as this will help employees to get to know one another and understand the importance of communicating effectively at work.

Team Building Activities

Customer Benefits

Another good reason to improve communication skills is to ensure that customers get the right information. In some businesses, this is more important than having good in-house communication. When customers get in contact with your business, they want to speak to someone with good communication skills and someone who can tell them exactly what it is they need to know without having issues.

However, not only do they want to be able to easily talk to you, but they also want you to talk to them. If they have any issues, questions or queries, they will want to be clearly informed. Team building activities will assist with developing these essential skills and may even give you an insight into what it’s like to be the customer. To do this, activities such as “Bridging the Divide” are ideal as teams are required to produce a product to a customer's exact specifications in order to win, ultimately meaning that they have to communicate with the customer.

Team Building Activities

Now you know exactly how our team building activities improve communication, but that’s not the only reason why you should look at team building days for your office. No matter what skills need improvement, we can help. So, take a look at all of our activities and see what will best suit you and your business. Contact us today.

Psychometric Profiling is a way of identifying specific personality traits and behavioural styles. Individuals are enabled to increase self-awareness and teams can identify collective strengths and how to best use these within existing team structures.

Psychometric profiling allows for quicker and more dependable Human Resources decisions, as well as aiding in predicting performance. Being able to predict performance improves accountability and harmony in an office environment. In turn, a positive environment leads to collaboration and enables a productive atmosphere.

A greater understanding and appreciation of your workforce can improve productivity and help your team reach the company's common goals. And whilst psychometric profiling may sound intimidating it has been proved to be a useful tool in a professional environment.

As we approach the end of another year, senior management and business owners up and down the country will be spending time evaluating progress over the last quarter, as well as looking back at the year as a whole. With so many technological advances in recent years, the workplaces that our staff members work in today are a much more exciting place to be than the offices of years gone by.

As businesses adapt to changes in the wider world, so, too, must the approach to employee training and development. Whether a small business or corporate, team building activities are still part and parcel of the workplace, albeit in varying forms and guises. We’ve waved goodbye to stuffy meeting rooms with trust falls and welcomed in with open arms much more exciting and innovative ways of developing team members outside of the office environment.

The Ever-Changing World of Team Building

For some businesses, there is still very much a need for internal team building activities – games and challenges within the workplace that encourage team members to work together and understand their strengths and weaknesses. However, much like our workplaces have evolved to changing times and technology, team building has, too.

The influence of television and pop culture is hard to ignore, and while we may not realise it, this has permeated into the world of team building – corporate or otherwise – and this is reflected in the types of events that are now on offer.

At their core, these events still serve the same purpose, encouraging interaction between team members and leading to better methods of communication through improved relationships, but they are delivered in a much more exciting manner.

You can now expect to take part in team building activities that are fun and challenging both physically and mentally, incorporating technology and smartphones and giving employees a day away from the office that truly feels like a break, not an exercise that used to be considered an afterthought.

Team Building Activities

Here at Team Challenge Company, we are constantly evolving with the world around us to ensure that the events and activities we provide businesses (from SME through to corporate level) are high quality, well-organised and highly beneficial to all involved.

The benefits are numerous; from boosting morale, helping to highlight future leaders within your team and inspiring your workforce to remain loyal to you, team building can also give a much-needed boost to communication and creativity levels within the team.

What’s more, we are very proud to announce that we have partnered with Catalyst Global which means that you and your business are guaranteed world-class team building activities. We have a wide range of activities to suit the modern world, such as a GPS Treasure Hunt,, Highland Games, Soapbox Derbies, and much more.

In short, is team building still relevant? Had the industry not adapted to the wider world that we now reside in, then it may well have been left behind. However, the changes that have been made ensure that there will always be a place for team building and development in today’s digital world.

For more information about any of our events and activities, please contact our event team today on 03300 04 09 03.

Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is a distinct approach to issues of communication and personal development through the connection between neurological processes, language and behavioural patterns learned through experience.

Understanding each of these elements can be used to reinforce existing positive behaviours and create new behaviours allowing individuals and teams to create changes to achieve specific goals. NLP is not only about competence and excellence, it is about wisdom and vision.

NLP uses models of exceptional and idealised behaviour which allows individuals to measure themselves and identify the ways in which they can adopt successful attitudes in everyday working life to create more efficient teams. NLP develops the emotional understanding of individuals through imitation and development of the best strategies, while also aiding the practical application of such strategies in the working environment.

There are a lot of ingredients that go into making the ideal team and driving your business forward; from mutual respect, open communication, organisation, and shared objectives, to innovation, collaboration, and creativity.

Unfortunately, day to day pressures and responsibilities can cause individuals and businesses to sacrifice creativity in the pursuit of “getting the job done”. However, to ensure your team are energised and focused, coming up with new ways to achieve shared objectives, you need to foster creative thinking and problem-solving. That is why we have an entire portfolio of outdoor and indoor team building activities to promote creativity and collaboration in the workplace – to help drive your business forward.

The importance of creativity in business has even been the topic of study at institutions like Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. But, if you’re still on the fence as to whether or not creativity should be a priority for you and your team, keep reading.

Why Your Team Needs Creative Team Building

Ultimately, creativity is the magic behind some of the world’s biggest brands and best innovators. From technological development as seen by the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates to different world perspectives from visionaries like Walt Disney.

There is a strong and enduring relationship between creativity and the key to business success, with both calling for the same approach to thought and activity. This is perhaps best summed up by Mary Lou Cook who once said: “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.”

Inventing

Creativity relies heavily on imagination and invention. Whether this involves creating something entirely new, or re-imagining something that already exists from a different perspective.

Business calls for the same thing. An invention is the product of good ideas, and good ideas are brought about by open communication, dynamic collaboration, and creative thinking.

Experimenting

No one gets it right the first time. Even those who do, don’t. They will have a cupboard full of drafts, brainstorms, ideas, and so-called ‘failed’ attempts long forgotten about. None of this means they failed though. Art and creativity, like business, is all about experimentation.

"He who never made a mistake never made a discovery." - Samuel Smiles

Of course, it’s more than throwing paint at a canvas and hoping it sticks nicely. In art, you try out new materials and techniques to see if you can create the desired effect. In business, you have an idea, which you test out to see if it fits your hypothesis – X% growth in 12 months, for example – and you run with it.

This experimentation lets you observe and collect data, so you can see if a) it worked as you’d predicted and b) if anything needs to change next time.

Growing

Creativity feeds the mind. Indulging in art and crafts or abstract and creative thinking allows an individual to experience new perspectives and helps them grow. The same is true in the workplace.

Through creative thinking and collaborative communication – think team brainstorming sessions for a new project – you can strengthen relationships with others, as well as confidence in your own ideas. This is also a great opportunity to reignite passion and dynamism, which in turn will help your business, and the individuals within it, to grow together.

Taking Risks

Being creative is brave. Taking a personal idea, belief, or perspective and putting it down on paper, canvas, or in any other medium is a big step for many as we remain self-conscious about how others perceive us. The same can be said for the workplace, where individuals, and sometimes even whole teams, can hold back on sharing ideas for fear of embarrassment, judgement, or getting it ‘wrong’.

But no risk, no reward. By encouraging your team to take chances in something as low-risk as a creative teambuilding exercise, you can encourage them to take the same sort of risks back in the workplace. This is a great mentality for the business to have too, though your risks will need to be more calculated. But can you imagine what the world would look like now if the minds behind Google, Apple and Facebook hadn’t taken a risk with ideas they believed in?

Breaking Rules

This one should be done within reason. When it comes to creative expression, rules are – for the most part – there to be broken. You can use coffee to paint, lipstick for sculptures, build furniture from Lego or whatever else you fancy.

In the business world though, breaking rules means challenging ideas. You don’t need to break rules and guidelines to re-imagine them. If your company policy has always been to do things a certain way, but you need to shake things up for the better, why not try something new? Challenge the 9-to-5 with flexible working hours, swap the meeting room for a coffee shop or revolutionise your industry with a new idea that goes ‘against’ everything your competitors have traditionally done.

Making Mistakes

In both the corporate and creative worlds, there are no mistakes. Rather, there are lessons. Something might not go to plan, some may even say it goes ‘wrong’ – but all you’ve done is practised the process of elimination, found out what not to do for the desired effect, and learned something along the way.

Once your team harnesses the power of making mistakes – and appreciating the mentality that mistakes are just lessons to help us improve further – the fear that holds back so many individuals and companies will be gone.

Having Fun

Last but most certainly not least, encourage your team to have fun! Creativity is fuel for, and fuelled by, fun. If you are passionate, enthused and engaged with what you are doing, you will do it so much better. This is perhaps the most important takeaway; make the journey to achieving a common objective fun. You really will get the best out of your team.

Our Big Picture activity is a great example of how everyone can have fun and be creative, expressing their individual ideas while contributing to something larger than the task at hand. A great metaphor for business goals and objectives, driven by a focused and forward-thinking team.

So, consider injecting some fun into your next team building event with one of our creative team challenges, and see if your business can unlock new ways of thinking and leading! Get in touch now to find out more.

The summer season is fast approaching - time for picnics, festivals and summer parties. Why not treat your staff to a corporate away day to boost their morale and motivation during the long sunny days? We have several activities available, from team building events to corporate family fun days. As a mobile events company – with offices based in London, Belfast, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Manchester – we can provide a corporate day at any location of your preference.

World Productivity Day is on the 20th of June and offers an excellent opportunity to get your team together to plan activities that promote productivity in the workplace. Set up some targets and goals that on completion, will earn your employees a bonus or reward for their hard work.

We’ve put together some other ways in which you can promote ongoing productivity at work.

Take Regular Breaks

While it may seem to be counter-productive, being able to take regular breaks during a long task has been shown to boost productivity amongst staff members. Working for 30, 60 or 90 minutes at a time, followed by a short break to move around or get a drink, assists in maintaining a steady level of performance. On the other hand, working for longer time periods with no breaks leads to a breakdown of performance and productivity.

Stop Multitasking; Promote Focus

We’ve all heard people call themselves adept at multitasking, however, as it turns out, multitasking isn’t good for our minds. We can easily overload our brains, making us sluggish and unmotivated and causing us to lose time during work. Promoting focus on a sole task gives workers breathing room, ensuring they apply their full attention to the task at hand.

Let Staff Set their Deadlines

We’ve all got deadlines to work towards but encouraging staff to set their own deadlines (within reason) can help make employees feel more in control, as well as promoting a focus on the work at hand and increasing productivity in the workplace.

Your staff work hard for your business, so it’s only right that they feel valued and know their efforts are appreciated. Offering incentives not only assists in boosting morale but it can also have positive results for the company as staff work harder to meet targets.

If you’d like to treat your staff to an event outside the workplace in exchange for their hard work, we can build your tailored corporate away day or offer an entertainment package for daytime or evenings.

Our team look forward to working with you to put together your perfect activity - contact us on 03300 04 09 03 or via our online enquiry form.

Businesses have now been working remotely for a few years due to the pandemic and many teams have found that the benefits often far outweigh the negatives. While managers were initially concerned as to how their teams would remain productive at the start, by and large, businesses have realised that there is another way of operating that doesn’t involve everyone being in the office 100% of the time.

Many businesses have already made clear their intention not to return to the old normal of everyone being in the office, offering staff the opportunity to work remotely and only come into the office on selected days when absolutely necessary. However, this does mean there is the need for finding new and inventive ways of team building. Many businesses have been making use of online team building games as they contend with working from home so that colleagues still can relax and socialise with each other.

Teams that play together stick together, and if you are struggling to find fun online team games that everyone can partake in either during a lunch hour or a Friday afternoon, you may wish to read on.

Escape the Mob

Escape the Mob is a virtual team building game hosted by Team Challenge Company which sees teams log in online. They are then faced with a simple problem – to crack the code and escape the mob. The game begins with a video that informs participants they have been incriminated with the perfect heist, caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The game can last for between one and three hours, accommodating as many participants as you like with a minimum of eight. This event has a number of key benefits as teams collaborate together to solve the problem and crack the code – basic principles which can be taken into the workplace (or, in the case of remote teams, the virtual workplace). Teams will quickly learn the value of communicating with one another over video chat which, as we have moved into this new way of working, is invaluable.

Why not get in contact with a member of our team to learn more about our Escape the Mob online team building game?

Online Console Team Games

As well as specialised team-building games, normal console games with online multiplayer functions can also serve a purpose in the realms of promoting teamwork – as well as just being good fun. One of the most popular games is Call of Duty which, admittedly, may not be every business’ go-to option due to the graphic violence in the game, but if all members of staff are fine with its contents then why not?

If you are not familiar with Call of Duty (often referred to simply as CoD), it is a multiplayer game where players can either team up or compete against one another in a military environment. Similar games include Battlefield and Fortnite. Should you prefer to promote console games that feature less violence, sports simulations such as the Fifa series are likely to be popular, particularly amongst sporty members of staff.

Of course, the main issue around promoting console games for the use of team building is the fact that not everyone may have the games (or even the consoles) required. Simply present this as one of several options for the team so that no member of the team feels left out and isolated.

Free Collaborative Online Team Games

If you remember sitting bored in the middle of an ICT lesson at school, you will likely be aware of websites filled with online games like Miniclip, many of which featured multiplayer functionality. One favourite in our office is Skribbl.io, which is an online version of Pictionary. All players enter a lobby and take it in turns to draw a picture based on a random card issued in the game.

Such games are a fun way to kill a few minutes at lunch, at the end of the day, or even as an energiser at the beginning of the day. If nothing else, it will be a great way to get the banter flying in the work chat, serving as a fantastic morale-booster, especially if you have members of the team who are missing regular human interaction.

Jonathan Hazley, co-director of one of the UK's leading corporate team building businesses, Team Challenge Company, on why forming a choir creates the ultimate team.

After the years of lockdowns and restrictions with no major sport or music concerts, it has been an electrifying experience to stand in a stadium as they echo again with the sounds of the national anthem and sing out from the stands when stars turn over the microphone to allow us to carry the song.

The benefits of group singing are 'plentiful and scientifically proven' so says David Hill, musical director of The Bach Choir and principal conductor of Yale Schola Cantorum. According to Sarah Wilson, a clinical neuropsychologist and head of the School of Psychological Sciences at Melbourne University, large parts of our brain 'light up' when singing. The physical exertion alone can energise individuals and release endorphins and the breathing techniques are a known stress buster.

During the lockdowns the news channels broadcast Italians singing from their windows in a show of togetherness. One American nurse's rendition of Amazing Grace went viral after she sang for her colleagues during a shift change on a Covid ward. Famous popstars felt compelled to reach out virtually and connect with fans with stars from Coldplay's Chris Martin, Gary Barlow and Elton John all streaming live from their living rooms.

For many of us, we recognise the power of singing to make us feel good, and in a group, this is only amplified. In the last decade choir singing has no longer been confined to school halls and church pews. Pre-pandemic the rebirth in the popularity of choir singing was due in large part to the US hit TV show Glee and in the UK, the 'Gareth Malone effect'. The English Choirmaster's BAFTA award-winning BBC TV series 'Military Wives' led to a Christmas number one. Contemporary 'Rock Choir' groups sprang up across the UK, which required no auditions or musical knowledge and attracted members from accountants to firefighters. Having had such success with Miltary Wives, Gareth Malone went on to take singing into the workplace in 'Sing While You Work' with choirs featuring workplaces from Citi Bank to Sainsbury's.

The tenets of a good choir of listening, collaboration and cohesion have all the hallmarks of the ultimate team. Along with the well-known boost to wellbeing, a psychological study from Michael, Sebanz, & Knoblich in 2016 found that increased interaction and coordination was seen to enhance commitment to a common goal. In a choir, from the sopranos to the bass, everyone has a part to play, and when individual voices join to create a harmony the choir becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Like any great team, when working in harmony, they can achieve things that would not be possible alone.

After being separated and working remotely for more than a year, supporting teams to reconnect is at the forefront of our minds. For many companies to successfully navigate the year ahead their teams will need to be focused and energised.

E-choir has been cleverly constructed to circumnavigate the slight time lag online to allow remote workers anywhere in the world to have the experience of being in a choir. While many of us may restrict our singing to the shower, E-Choir is designed to be inclusive and allow everyone to feel relaxed and empowered to take part without fear of embarrassment. Participants stay on mute and can record their part individually, on their phone, Dictaphone or WhatsApp. No individual need ever be heard alone. In this non-threatening context, we have witnessed that even the most reserved are surprised by what they can achieve, going far beyond their perceived limitations. Those in a team who are keen singers and want to share can be selected and allowed to shine.

The shared moment of celebration comes post-event, where attendees are sent a final version of their song with all voices professionally mixed by skilled music producers. This final song, a powerful demonstration of unity, can be kept and replayed in future and the experience of singing together will create a talking point which will last far beyond the end of the event.

Quizzes make a great form of evening entertainment and they are a versatile activity that can be readily adapted to suit different audiences. From classic and traditional questions to more unique quiz round ideas, there are plenty of options to choose from!

Here at Team Challenge Company, we are a team building company that is well aware of the importance of ensuring that quizzes are interesting, engaging, and valuable. The Big Quiz is our fun and competitive team quiz, expertly presented by our professional team to ensure you and your colleagues can make the most of the event.

However, just what exactly is it that makes a quiz stand out? What are the factors that will make your team’s quiz stand head and shoulders above the rest? We’re here to outline the key points and discuss the important components that go into making the best quizzes.

Fun Quiz Rounds

Nobody wants to get stuck with the same old quiz rounds over and over again, so it’s important to add some variety to your event with fun quiz rounds. We have a wide assortment of quiz round ideas to help you pick out some different options, ranging from new twists on classic rounds to entirely bespoke ideas that will help your quiz stand out from the rest!

Teams engaging in our Big Quiz team building activity will benefit from our extensive wealth of knowledge in the industry, which enables us to help you pick out activities and quiz round ideas that will provide the most benefit – and enjoyment – to the occasion. Let us help to create a fun quiz tailored to the needs of you and your employees.

Variety

This ties into the above point, but variety really is the key to a successful quiz. Whether it is variety in terms of the questions you are asking teams or variety by way of different rounds, there are plenty of ways in which you can work to make your quiz as varied and exciting as possible.

Here at Team Challenge Company, we can tailor each round in The Big Quiz to suit different ages and abilities. We can also include a mixture of visual, audio, and cryptic rounds to ensure you can enjoy the maximum variety possible in your quiz event.

An Engaging Atmosphere

While the rounds and questions that you choose for your quiz are understandably an essential part of the event, much more goes into organising and running a successful quiz than just questions alone.

In order to maximise the value of the activity and boost the learning outcomes, an engaging atmosphere is also essential. The right environment will ensure that everyone gets as much as possible out of the occasion, boosting motivation and productivity back in the office as well as during the event.

Friendly Competition

A little friendly competition never hurt anyone! Although it is essential for everyone to be able to work together effectively as a team, some harmless competition can help to drive motivation and push productivity, encouraging team members to work together to meet targets and give the entire business a boost.

Friendly competition can leave employees feeling united with their colleagues, forging a closer bond between team members even as they strive to be the winning team in the quiz! Fun and entertaining, it’s a great way to encourage competition without compromising on positive workplace relationships.

Building Better Bonds

Encouraging the building of positive relationships in the workplace is only a good thing, and quizzes are a great way to do just that in an informal, relaxed setting.

Contrary to popular belief, friendly competition can actually lead to building better bonds between team members, helping to integrate new starters into the team while developing friendships between individuals. After all, a team is only as good as its separate parts, so it’s important to make sure that everyone in the team gels together effectively.

The Big Quiz

Of course, the best quizzes aren’t just about fun and games. We are a team building company that expertly blends enjoyment with valuable learning outcomes, ensuring that our team bonding activities are both fun and useful.

Our evening entertainment quiz event, The Big Quiz, is perfect either as a standalone activity or as the grand finale to a corporate team building day. There is no more rewarding profession than working in the healthcare industry. Knowing that the hard work you put in every day is saving lives and, because of that huge level of responsibility, the pressures that come with it are immense.

In other sectors and industries, if you have a bad day it means missing out on a sale or falling short of your profit margin but you can come back and do better the next day. In healthcare, so often you have just one shot to get things right. When it comes to staff development in healthcare, so much is based around the psychological aspects of the job, as well as on-the-job learning which can lead to opening new doors.

NHS Staff Development

The NHS offers staff at all levels Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities, which includes on-the-job learning, e-learning, courses and workshops and voluntary options. Depending on the area of responsibility, finding the time to dedicate to staff development can be extremely difficult, with staff working long and unsociable hours.

It is for this reason why, particularly for members of staff with roles of high responsibility, online training courses are popular. E-learning allows the member of staff to learn at their own pace, logging on as and when they get the chance. Not only does this allow for those workers who are unable to dedicate a set amount of time each week to continue with their professional development, but it also allows for others to complete a course as quickly as possible.

For a role that requires such a level of flexibility, access to these opportunities requires the same flexible approach to be adopted that enables all staff to achieve personal development in the healthcare sector.

Role of Nurse Educator in Staff Development

Staff Development in Nursing Management

It is no secret that one of the most important roles in the healthcare industry is that of the nurse. In many cases, this can feel like a thankless position with members of staff expected to tackle all kinds of challenges around the clock but, make no mistake about it, we are incredibly thankful for the role that nurses play.

Nurse educators are, in many ways, the unsung heroes of the healthcare sector. These are the members of staff that have dedicated their careers to helping other nurses be the best that they can possibly be. They are responsible for the development of the next generation of nurses that will be tasked with looking after the country. That is no small feat.

Away from creating and delivering an academic curriculum that teaches students what is required in an ever-evolving role, nurse educators also have a vested interest in the personal development of those they are working with. Working in healthcare is a demanding task, no matter what your role may be, and to make it as a nurse you have to have almost super-human qualities. As someone that has been there and done it, the role of a nurse educator in staff development means that they make themselves available to those they are mentoring to answer any and all questions.

Just as nurses are an integral part of the healthcare system so, too, are the teams that manage them. A strong nursing management team encourages nurses to work together to achieve a common goal, as well as helping teams to develop strong teamwork and communication.

Organisational qualities are essential to the success of nursing management and, perhaps more so than in any other industry, it is important nurses are provided with the opportunities they need to advance into managerial positions. Unlike in other sectors, to be a nursing manager you have to have had hands-on experience in the role – there is limited scope for transferable skills coming from outside of the healthcare industry, with the challenges that are faced by nurses being truly unique than any other profession.

Identifying future leaders, then, is essential and the best way of doing that is by providing staff development opportunities. This could be through additional learning, where the member of staff can earn relevant qualifications which allows them to open new doors career-wise, as well as volunteering and/or shadowing in other positions.

Just as in any other sector, when colleagues see their peers given the opportunity to progress this naturally makes them want to work harder to be afforded those same chances. That motivation encourages success and engages the team which is fundamental to any successful workforce. This will also encourage those members of staff to look at themselves and consider why they have not yet been chosen for those opportunities and how they can change that – this is when a productive conversation may be needed with management.
