Five ways to boost teamwork

September 13, 2024

The ability to work well together is vital to the success of any team. Effective communication, the willingness to resolve conflict and to collaborate to find the answers to problems are all signs of good teamwork.

Here, we explain some of the top considerations for bringing your team together for the benefit of the whole organisation.

Collaboration and Engagement

  • Working on tasks alone increases the sense of isolation and can lead to your people feeling withdrawn.
  • Hybrid or at-home working conditions can make it more challenging to bring people together, so think about where you can encourage group work.
  • Schedule meetings that involve the whole team and set aside time to encourage social interaction. Your team will feel more engaged and valued and will likely be more productive as a result.
  • Think about the placement of desks in the office and consider moving your people around regularly to allow new relationships to flourish.

Allocating Ownership and Responsibility

  • Don't allow your team to be micromanaged; it isn't an effective use of your time or their skills. When the team rely on instructions from their manager, they will be discouraged from working more closely with each other.
  • Assign areas of responsibility to each individual based on their skill set, experience and interest to ensure everyone is working to their full potential.
  • Having clear individual focuses gives people space to take their own initiative and builds a culture of trust amongst the team.

Resolving Conflict

  • Conflict amongst team members isn't uncommon, especially in larger organisations; however, it is important to resolve issues quickly to ensure they do not hinder productivity and lower group morale.
  • Experts suggest that a clash in opinions and desires is often the leading cause of conflict; team leaders should take the time to listen and communicate with their people when problems arise.
  • Remember to stay impartial and consider developing a process for conflict resolution to help you catch issues early and stop them from distracting the team from ongoing projects for too long.

Development Opportunities

  • Effective teamwork stems from driven and satisfied individuals.
  • By taking the steps to encourage personal progression, you will create a productive environment where everyone is motivated to reach their own goals and help each other achieve theirs, enhancing teamwork.

If your people lack team spirit, team building experiences that bring people together can be an excellent way to break down barriers and develop new relationships, not to mention boosting morale and improving team satisfaction.
